More than 20 years ago, I opened my own practice. I knew how to care for patients — I had almost no education in running a business. So I learned by doing: some lessons from great advisors, most from mistakes and experience.
I saw four patients on day one. What followed was years of attracting patients, hiring, building systems, and controlling costs — all decisions I'd never been trained to make.
The practice grew into the success I'd envisioned: roughly 100 patients a week, a full team, real independence. But as reimbursement declined, keeping that success meant working harder, not smarter. Eventually I realized the business I'd built no longer supported the life I wanted — so I changed the model and reinvented how I practiced. That's the lesson I share most: a successful practice isn't enough if it isn't the right one for you.
I'm also a healthcare commercial real estate advisor, helping doctors with startups, leases, relocations, and purchases. And I founded Helmets First!, a nonprofit that partners with roughly 30 police departments to give away more than 35,000 free bicycle helmets to kids.
There are plenty of consultants who'll tell you how to build a seven-figure practice. I think the better question comes first: What do you want? Every doctor's right practice looks different — yours should be designed around your life, not someone else's formula.
Every practice and situation is different. My job is to help you ask better questions and avoid expensive mistakes — and to bring in the right attorney, accountant, or other expert when the question is outside my lane.
I'm writing Practice Freedom Blueprint™: How Healthcare Professionals Can Build Practices That Support the Life They Want — built around one question: what do you want your practice to make possible?
